The Benefits Of Volunteering With Children

Volunteering with children

For many young adults, travelling to the developing world to do volunteer work seems like a perfect vacation, blending adventure with service and making a difference to an impoverished community.

Volunteers who sign up for the DTR Teaching Program will make an important impact on young children’s education. They will be placed at either one of the two local community public schools where they will work alongside local teachers and other international volunteers. The academic subjects that volunteers will assist in teaching are Life Skills, Social Studies, English, Mathematics and Physical Studies.

Potential Benefits of Volunteer Travel

Although volunteer travel requires flexibility, the rewards of immersing yourself in a new culture can be enormous.

  • Creates a hands-on way to teach the values of compassion, tolerance, flexibility, cross-cultural understanding and global responsibility to children and teens.

  • Provides an antidote to the U.S. American culture’s messages of competition, self-absorption and materialism.

  • Allows young people to see that there is a world outside their own, and provides a unique opportunity to become acquainted with a new culture and its people.

  • Empowers children to believe they can make a difference through intercultural friendships and cooperative community work.

  • Gives children new (and sometimes life-changing) insights and increases their self-esteem.

  • Expands children’s understanding of community and social issues and teaches new lessons and life skills.

  • Produces shared memories that last a lifetime.

Working as a volunteer teacher will help you reach out to a new generation of underprivileged children in dire need of real guidance and care.
