Volunteer Reflection

DTR on our way for the first school trip

Gemma Sarsfield:

I came to South Africa to volunteer in the Sports Development Project for 3 and a half months and it was one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. The majority of my time was spent at the Christian David Primary School, however I was lucky enough to also work at Steenberg Primary School. Both schools introduced me to pupils who captured my heart and provided me with memories that I will always cherish.

My weekdays were spent in school, learning about the challenges South African youth face as well as planning and delivering physical education lessons. My weekends were spent building new friendships with other volunteers from all over the world. We went on adventures such as shark cage diving and bungee jumping, just to name a few!

As I come from a Sports and Education background it fascinated me to see how priorities and methodologies differed in another culture. For that very reason I, like many other volunteers, decided to return to South Africa to continue my journey.
